Energy Technology Data Exchange
Cooperation with the International
Nuclear Information System

arrow Latest News—
The Exchange has long recognized the benefits of collaborating with IEA Information Centres and others in the information industry. One of the most significant partnering ventures outside the IEA is with the International Atomic Energy Agency's International Nuclear Information System (IAEA/INIS). In 1994, the two organizations formalized a longstanding relationship by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).

INIS is the leading information source for scientific and technical literature published worldwide on the peaceful applications of nuclear science and technology. INIS maintains a bibliographic database, entitled the INIS Database, which currently contains over 2.6 million references with English abstracts from 1970 to the present. The Database is updated weekly.

ETDE and INIS are both international information systems that were established to facilitate information sharing among their member countries. INIS focuses on the peaceful uses of nuclear energy; ETDE focuses on all aspects of energy. All ETDE member countries are also members of INIS. Because of this membership duality for ETDE countries, the Exchange adopted INIS standards for information exchange, with some minor modifications to accommodate ETDE's broader subject scope. Much of the INIS information is also included in the ETDE Energy Database because of this duality. The MOU identifies specific areas for future cooperation, with a special emphasis on database development and the assurance of data integrity. Goals for technical cooperation include shared authorities, standards and publications. In 2004, INIS broadened their mission to also encompass Nuclear Knowledge Management responsibilities.

ETDE and INIS have formed a Joint Technical Committee (JTC) to facilitate cooperation on issues of interest to both organizations. The JTC is currently meeting on a biannual basis.
