About the IEA

arrow Latest News—
When the IEA was founded in 1974, the main objective of its member countries was to reduce dependence on imported oil through the development of alternative sources while improving energy efficiency. More recently, concerns such as greenhouse gas emissions and globalization have underlined the need for international co-operation.

To support these core issues, the IEA created a contract - Implementing Agreement - and a system of standard rules and regulations, the IEA Framework, which would allow interested Member and non-Member governments to pool resources and research the development and deployment of particular technologies.

For more than 35 years, technology collaboration has been a fundamental building block among IEA Member and non-Member countries in facilitating progress of new or improved energy technologies. For a brief overview of the energy technology collaboration programme, see Frequently Asked Questions. ETDE's Energy Database supports the IEA as an information resource to help meet the objectives of the collaboration programme.

There are currently 40 Implementing Agreements working in the areas of Fossil Fuels, Renewable Energies and Hydrogen, End-Use (Buildings, Industry and Transport), Fusion and Cross-Sectional Activities. For highlights of the recent activities of the Implementing Agreements, see the recent free publication Energy Technologies at the Cutting Edge.

The IEA Committee on Energy Research and Technology (CERT) and its Working Parties review the effectiveness, achievements and strategy of each Implementing Agreement. For detailed information on the CERT and its Working Parties, as well as the Ad Hoc and Expert Groups, see the free publication Mobilising Energy Technology.

For a brief overview of the energy technology collaboration programme, see the IEA Website page. There you will find the brochure “Frequently Asked Questions” and the publication Energy Technologies at the Cutting Edge, which reviews recent accomplishments of all the agreements, their policy messages and background, participation tables, the IEA Framework and the IEA Shared Goals.

IEA publications are known world-wide for their objectivity. For current information about what publications are available, see Publications Catalogue. Most of these are also cited in ETDEWEB.
